    8 Weekly Sessions for Advanced Level

    Tuesdays beginning July 23, 2019, 10:30 am - 2:30 pm

    (Sessions may not be held on consecutive weeks due to other MAGG pre-scheduled workshops.)

    Advanced Level - This session is for self-directed students proficient in basic skills, who want to refine their jewelry making and take their work to the next level.  Learn a wide range of metal and stone-setting techniques from a professional metalsmith who can help you get your individualized work looking top notch.  A variety of demos will be shown each semester and design discussions will be ongoing.  Great experience for those on the professional track or those who want their individual jewelry visions to come to life.

    Prerequisite:  Three (3) Intermediate levels of instruction or permission from instructor.

    Cost is $252.00 for non-members with a 10% discount for MAGG members, and 20% discount for high school or college students.

    8 Week Instructor - Helen Blythe-Hart


    Helen is an internationally collected metal artist and educator.  She has been metalsmithing and teaching for over 40 years.  Her invention, a revolutionary soldering method called the Heat Zone, has helped thousands to conquer the torch.  She uses her method to create strikingly original jewels opulently encrusted with colorful gemstones and futuristic sculptures.  Degrees include an MFA and BFA in Jewelry and Metalsmithing and decades of Gemology.

    How Much

    Intermediate Level - Students will continue to hone their skills in these jewelry making and metalsmithing sessions.  Learn how to refine your designs and streamline your process so you can do your best work at your current level.  Learn a variety of techniques from a professional metalsmith.  Define your individual style through projects and demos.  Handy tips and tricks will be shown weekly to help speed up your learning curve, so you can get the results you want quicker.  Great opportunity for those wanting to continue building on their basic skills and learn how to refine their style and take their work to the next level.

    Three (3) Beginning levels of instruction required for this class or permission from instructor.

    The Metal Arts Guild of Georgia is hosting a Gem and Tool Swap and Sale for the metro Atlanta/Georgia Metals community in our studio building at 5353 Buford Hwy. NE, Atlanta, GA 30340 (very near the former location of JFF Jewelry Supply).

    This is an opportunity to get rid of unwanted stuff, find more stuff to take home, meet your fellow gem and jewelry neighbors, tour the MAGG studio, meet MAGG studio artists, and join MAGG.

    OPEN TO ALL - Please share this info with your students, friends, and other metals professionals.

    RSVP to secure a spot for selling or trading - $5 for a jewelers' bench top - or its size equivalent.  Double spaces available for $10.  Space is limited, so first come first served.  Click to register.

    Suggested items include:  Beads, Beading supplies, Books and magazines, Display items, Findings, Gemstones, Metal, Tools, Lapidary equipment, Tables, Tents, etc. (see info below about selling large items).

    Sell big things without carrying them to the sale.  Large items, like tents, or equipment, can be sold on our bulletin board.  Photograph your item, print a page with item and contact info, and attach to our board.  $5 per 8.5" x 11" page  This bulletin board will remain after the sale day for future referrals.

    A Weekend Workshop with Barbara Mann

    September 14 & 15, 2019

    Saturday & Sunday, 9:30 am - 5:00 pm



    Barbara Mann has had over 40 years of experience as a metal and jewelry artist.  She graduated from the University of Georgia with BFA and MFA degrees.  She has taught for many years as an adjunct instructor at the Lamar Dodd School of Art, with the UGA Studies Abroad Program in Cortona, Italy and in Costa Rica through the UGA Continuing Education Program.  Barbara has won numerous awards for her work and conducted many workshops throughout the Southeast and for MAGG.

    Barbara, a generous instructor with an engaging personality, will talk about various mold-making materials and casting waxes and show examples.  She has done thousands of castings, is fascinated by the possibilities, and looks forward to sharing her research with us and seeing our creations!

    DAY #1

    • Make an impression of something fairly small, perhaps delicate, (it won't be damaged), with a mold material that hardens (cures) in three minutes.
    • Pour wax into the mold and then add or subtract or manipulate the wax image, add sprues for casting.
    • Invest, burn-out in the kiln overnight. (You don't have to be there!)


    DAY #2

    • Pour molten silver into the mold.
    • Finish your casting by removing the sprues, filing, grinding, polishing or tumbling.


    VOILA!  Walk out with some unique and beautiful castings!


    Bring something small that you would like to take an impression to make a one-sided mold.  (see examples in workshop image).  The mold material we will use, Mega-sil, is used in making molds of ear canals for making hearing aids.  The mold material has baby oil in it which will not harm most things, but will leave a residue which can be wiped off.  It will stain fabric and paper.



    Mega-sil mold material will be available for students to purchase at $2.00 per package which will make 1-3 molds depending on the size of the mold.


    Barbara will demo several other mold materials which are available from the Engineer Guys store in Atlanta or from jewelry supply companies.


    Students will pour molten wax into their molds, sprue the models, invest, then cast.  Barbara will have (1) Victory brown sculpture wax mixed with some fragrant beeswax and (2) another hard wax.


    The MAGG studio, or Barbara, will have the tools and equipment you need for the workshop, but you may prefer to bring your own of the following:

    Optivisor

    Wax working tools

    Alcohol lamp

    Wax pen, like MaxWax

    Finishing tools for the cast pieces: saw frame, saw blades, needle files, small grinding and polishing wheels for the flex shaft.  Barbara likes aluminum oxide points, heatless grinding wheels, and blue high-flex polishers (#332-401/10, Rio Grande), radial bristle discs, polishing pins.


    Barbara will bring some grinding, polishing, flex shaft wheels, etc. for those who would liike to buy them from her.


    Silver:  bring 1-2 troy ounces of clean silver scrap or casting grain.  If you would like Barbara to bring silver for you, please email her at bimann2@hotmail.com to let her know and she will bring some at about $15 per ounce, plus tax.

     Cloisonné Enameling 5-Day Workshop

    Cloisonné enameling is essentially drawing with wires and filling in around them with glass.  Several processes will be discussed but cloisonné will be the primary technique covered.  It can be simple or complex.  Everyone will learn how to use Harlan's special jig for forming repetitive shapes in cloisonné.  Basic metalsmithing/jewelry skills and some enameling experience would be helpful, but beginners are welcome.  Harlan will bring some 1 7/8 inch copper and fine silver disks and some small copper vessels, which will be for sale to students.

    Torch-fired Enameling with

    Anne is an enamellist, metalsmith and lampworker (she makes glass beads).  She is inspired by many of the abstract painters, space objects and creatures from her own imagination, molecular level shapes, geometry, clay artists, building structures, flowers, etc.


    Using a torch, various methods of line creation and imagery within your enamel piece will be demonstrated.  By applying successive layers of liquid, acrylic, as well as transparent and opaque powdered enamels, techniques such as sgraffito, graphite, sifting, firescale, acid-etching, painting and more will be covered.  no matter your skill level, there will be opportunity to delve into new ideas and principles.

     Jewelry Meets Sculpture

    In this workshop you will fabricate a one-of-a-kind necklace using found objects, scrap silver and gemstones.  To showcase your creation you will construct a box that will serve to keep your piece on display when you are not wearing it.  You will also learn to make your own fold-over clasp for a secure chain closure.  In the end you will have true object d' art worthy of being put on a pedestal.  See some examples at http://rsalley.com/sculpture/

    CALL FOR ARTISTS

    ART JEWELRY SIP AND SHOP

    Presented by Atlanta's Premier Guild of Metalsmiths

    Sat., Dec. 7, 2019 from 10 am til 4 pm

    Set up 7 - 10 am. Clean up 4 - 5 pm. Depart 5 pm sharp.

    Each artist will rent a 6' x 8' space which may be filled if desired, edge to edge with furnishings.  Each artist's space will be surrounded by common area, which may not be used for anything except pedestrian traffic.  Electricity will be available to all spaces.  Food, liquid refreshment and adult beverages will be available.  Thirty (30) spaces are available to rent.

    DEADLINES / MEMBER ARTIST FEES

    • NO COMMISSION will be charged.
    • Early bird fee:  $125 per space due by August 11, 2019.  Fee after August 11 - $150 per space..
    • Each artist is required to submit up to three jpegs resolution (300dpi suitable for print production) and an artist's statement with their fee in order to have the space reserved.  Good jpegs and artist statements are essential to create good marketing for the event and will be featured in print media, and on a new dedicated web page that will become live as we receive your jpegs.  If you need Tips and Tricks with jpegs or writing a Statement - NOT a resume, come to a free workshop at MAGG led by the Art Jewelry Sip and Shop Committee, Wednesday, August 7th, 2019 from 7 pm - 9 pm.  Just RSVP here. 
    • Registration is open to all MAGG members and Non-Members.  Not a MAGG member?  Click to Join or Renew today!  Membership is $50 annually.
    • Acceptance is on a first-come basis until the 30 spaces are full.  If your payment is accepted, you are registered for a space.
    • NO Refunds or Cancellations
    • Artists are responsible for their own sales and for filing sales tax returns.
    • Spaces may be shared but the same fee applies per artist.
    • WiFi in the building will NOT be reliable so bring a device with cell data or be able to tether to your phone to process credit cards with a service like Square.
    • 6-foot tables WILL be provided for a $25 fee.  You must sign-up and pay for a table.

    MAGG WILL PROVIDE OR ARRANGE FOR:
    • A police officer present for the duration of the event.
    • Liability insurance for set-up and day of the event in case of injuries.  We are NOT insuring your work so please be vigilant.

      HOW TO PARTICIPATE AS A VOLUNTEER

      We will need some extra help with set-up on Saturday, with hospitality, artist breaks, and greeting guests.  Also we need help putting signs out in the morning and collecting them after the event.  If you would like to join us, please contact Diane Treuman at 678-525-5439 to let her know what hours you are available.

      This is a unique and eclectic space for creatives, located in the Floataway Community near Virginia-Highland / Morningside and minutes away from Emory University, Buckhead, Decatur and I-85.  Enter Zonolite off the triangular intersection at Briarcliff, Johnson Rd. and Zonolite Rd.

      MAGG will be using the Zone of Light Studio for other Sip and Shop events, and for other social and fundraising events throughout the year.  The year 2020 is already on the Committee agenda!
