Polymer clay allows artists to play with color in 3D!

Stacy Nathan

May 4 & 5, 2019

Saturday & Sunday, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Join Stacy Nathan, whose personal mixed-media work incorporates Polymer Clay, enamel, gem stones and found objects.  Stacy sought out master teachers to hone her expertise in both Polymer Clay and enamel.  Currently, Stacy teaches classes in metalsmith techniques at MAGG.

Polymer clay allows artists to play with color in 3D.  Its qualities encourage us to borrow from other art forms like Raku pottery, lamp working, quilting, sewing and marquetry to name just a few.  Textures can be 'patinated' using acrylic and the new Genesis heat set paints.  Polymer can imitate ivory and wood or just make people wonder "What is this?  I want to touch it and find out!"

This class will introduce metalsmiths to polymer clays' basic qualities and its potential as a design medium and tool.  We will cover several techniques such as color gradation, millefiori, backfilling and textures; more if time permits.  Our goal will be creating pieces that can be set in silver, layered with other stones as well as smaller elements incorporating wire, feathers or beads.

Students should purchase one or two colors of Premo! Sculpey or Premo! Accents clay.  Because of our curing temperatures and the requirements of our projects there will be no substitution of other types of polymer clay.  Our approach will be traditional bezel setting and I will discuss my method of 'shape packing' and why you might choose one over the other.

Come learn how the 'new kid on the block' has grown up from kids creating gnomes, fairies and miniature food to the darling of contemporary jewelers. sculptors and crafters the world over.
